I got home one late evening with my roommate, very tired, as we had been out with the elders. When we got home everyone had gone to bed. All I wanted was to eat and sleep. We walked into the kitchen and their lay one pot and pan with our supper in it so we quickly dished up our food and did not waste any more time. My roommate finished before me, washed his plate and went to bed. When I finished, I stood up to wash my plate and in my mind all I could think of was my bed. As I stood up I looked at the stove and saw the pot and pan that had held our food something inside me said ‘Wash those items as well’, but I quickly dismissed the idea because I wanted to go to bed. But the thought continued while I washed my plate although in my mind I wanted to justify why I couldn’t wash the pot and pan. I knew I was not going to be in trouble for not doing it and no one was going to notice it anyway, but I knew the Lord knew.
From this little incident, I realized how we need to learn to serve the Lord in our homes first. I strongly believe that as young Christians we need to open our eyes to see the needs in our homes first and foremost. We cannot go to sweep the church and serve with the elders if we cannot first be responsible at home. When I say responsible I am not talking about doing things that people can see, as in my case, but do everything as if we are doing it for Christ himself. It’s so easy to do things that people will notice, even if they don’t say anything, but you will still have some pride in your heart….I did that! I have not fully learned how to take my place at home but I pray that the Lord may teach me to serve Him first at home then in the church because that is what is paramount for me.
I could write ten pages telling you how this little incident exposed my attitude, but I hope my experience will help you as much as it has helped me.
